Our Story

As an operating room nurse with over 20 years of experience, my aim was to develop an application that helps OR professionals set up and prepare for surgical cases, whilst staying up to date with their own professional development. ScrubUp streamlines information in order to deliver safer patient practices and optimized and informed healthcare.

Operating room professionals learn their unique technical skills on the job. As a junior nurse learning the skills of the operating room, I was unaware of the pressures, facing surgical teams, on a daily basis.

The operating room is an environment where the room for error is minimal and time is always critical.

The complexity of the role in understanding various surgical approaches from an open procedure to a closed, to an endoscopic to a laparoscopic & now robotic approach, all requiring various instrumentation, setup and hardware. Without the right clinical training & support, this role can be very challenging.

Three months into my training I was asked to scrub (instrument nurse) for a highly skilled yet extremely intimidating surgeon, the surgery wasn’t going to plan, the patient was losing blood, tension in the operating room was building and I did not have the right equipment. Waiting for equipment felt like an eternity and the surgeon’s patience was being tested. If my circulator was a marathon sprinter they still would not have been quick enough. Luckily the instrument was available, on the shelf, the size was a little short for the depth required but the surgeon managed.

As an OR clinician, at the OR table, your role is to remain calm, composed, alert and focused and to support the surgeon. Tension can easily build, which is why we need to be prepared for what can go wrong and what equipment may be required. As part of a team the surgeon relies on the OR nurse/tech to have all the equipment available and thinking ahead can reduce tension.

I lacked experience and knowledge and was not able to easily troubleshoot the situation. My surgical exposure, situational awareness and knowledge have since evolved and I can look back on this case now and understand what I could have done better.

What I was able to do was to remain calm and focused, whilst doubting my own capabilities. I was lucky, the surgeon understood I was a junior and that my circulator was inexperienced in the specialty, to my surprise, he actually, “thanked me for my support, with such a difficult case, and remarked “you did okay as a junior”, the relief was instant.

This case is not a stand out, situations like this happen daily in all operating rooms globally.

This is the reason I developed ScrubUp, our mobile application reaches a global market, who feedback their likes and dislikes and record their own surgical profile. As an MVP our mobile application has had over 30,000 downloads in over 130 countries, with amazing support and feedback.

This was the driver to develop our commercial platform.

Our commercial platform is a licensed stand alone and or integrated EMR solution, which can be completely customized to a hospital or healthcare network. Divided into surgical specialties, we currently have 15 available and are building more. These specialties are preloaded with procedures and real clinical data, which includes a full equipment checklist, with images and the capability to add procurement and logistics. Data can be shared with surgical teams and a surgeons profile can be easily updated in real time. There is an ability for training and education to be added to the application.

We all know surgery is becoming more specialised, technical and demanding, which is why we need insightful and supportive software like ScrubUp to minimise mistakes and to support our clinicians who are under immense pressure to strive for perfection and efficiency 100% of the time.

There has never been a better time to support your operating room staff to deliver the best and efficient surgical care possible.
